Slice of Life Saturday’s ~ Buffalo Soldier

Happy Saturday!

As you read this post, I’ll be out in the wilderness getting reaqcuainted with nature after a long winter spent hiding under the blankets. I’ll also probably be warding off bees.

BeesHave I told you lately how much I hate bees? Honey is one thing, but buzzing in my face and threatening to sting me is a game I refuse to play. I have a feeling I’ll be running away from the relentless buzzers all weekend while my husband looks on with a combination of embarrassment and sympathy on his face. His fix for my bee phobia is to stand still and ignore them. “They won’t bother you if you don’t bother them,” he always proclaims. I rebuttal with, “Yes, you keep saying that, but remember that time when you did absolutely nothing to anger the bees and, as a prize, they stung you mulitple times in the head?”

And, folks, that’s why I don’t heed Squirrel’s advice. Clearly he has no clue. So, if you see a chick running around in circles on a campsite in North East, Maryland, that be me.

In order to better deal with the bees, I’ve packed a bit of booze. Here’s how it works. I drink the booze and become invincible, conquering all the bees with the force of my beer bottle. Okay, that’s a lie. I’ll be in the tent cowering in the corner under my sleeping bag.

How was your Easter? We enjoyed a relaxing day at my Aunt’s house. I think we spent the entire day feasting. When one feasts, one lounges. That just about sums up our Easter Sunday. I made a coconut cake and my spicy baked beans.

On Saturday, I made Squirrel take me back to the bison farm so I could visit the fury beasts. I know the sign reads “Dangerous.” I get it, they’re muscular animals. However, I’m reluctant to believe that these cute fellas are anything less than gentle. I stopped to snap a few shots, and some of them sauntered over to the fence and struck a few poses. One of them even gave me a come-hither-over-the-shoulder pose. I just about died. I told my dad to prepare the back yard for a new pet and sent him this picture.

We’re going to call him Hank, and he’ll have his own theme song: Buffalo Soldier, of course.

Squirrel and I made a trip to the local dump last weekend for compost. I was forced to climb Mount Stinky Dirt and shovel heaping piles of steaming, earthy dirt into the back of Squirrel’s truck. I spent most of my time taking pictures while Squirrel hauled the dirt.

Mt. Stinky Dirt

After scooping dirt into the truck, we took it home and scooped it back out. Good times were had by all.

Say What?

  • Dirt under my fingernails drives me bonkers!
  • Have you noticed that more and more people are walking around on their phone and not paying the least bit of attention to where they’re going? Yeah, me too! I’m getting fed up with people running into me because they’re so dang concerned about sending out a text. Get this… Not a single apology. Get off your phone or pull over to the side of the grocery aisle to send a text.
  • Mickey Mouse’s voice is like a cheese grater on my brain. One of the parents brought their kids into the office the other day and she turned on the Disney Channel. I wanted to bang my head against the wall. How do parents of small children listen to that all day?
  • Speaking of Disney, I’m utterly obsessed with Disney/Pixar  and Dreamworks. I’m thinking I want my 30th birthday to be a minion party. How cool would that be? Also, do you want to build a snowman?

  • Now that spring is here and sandals are in season, I need to get a pedicure. The thing is, I may have waited too long in between pedicures, and my feet are kind of gross. I feel bad for the lucky guy/gal who has to tend to my feet. Poor sap.

Say Cheese!

Dirt hauling calls for massive, meat-filled reuben sammiches.

How pitiful are these two jokers?

There’s nothing better than spending a Sunday watching the ball game with beer, steamed crabs, and raw oysters.

My Easter present from my grandparents. I can’t wait to shake up a new martini recipe.

This is a result of a cocoa powder blowout. It took me forever to clean the cocoa out of all the crevices.

You know what’s worse than dirty fingernails? Food photos with dirty fingernails. I see ‘em all the time. It’s horrible. Also, chipped fingernail polish in food photos. There’s a reason you can’t wear nail polish in the food industry: people don’t like eating it. GAAAAAAHHHHHH! I feel like you will agree with me on these points, and needed share my angst with someone.

Also, though terribly frightened of bees, I do like their soft, floofy furr.

Bees are my mortal enemy. Yes I love honey and understand bees are awesome and necessary, but I’m so scared of them. I can hear them and other bugs buzz near me and I yelp and run. I’m sure it’s hilarious. I’m so not an outdoorsy girl!

first fun fact: Despicable Me is Dreamworks, not Disney/Pixar. However I love Disney/Pixar and Despicable Me too :D

You and those bison are hilarious!

and you are way braver than I-I do nooooot like camping (I was forced into it a lot as a kid and always hated it-plus….allergies) and eeeeek! beees! HATE EM! Plus I’ve never been stung so I’m not sure if I’m allergic (my dad and aunt are allergic to bees so it’s possible) :/

“Pull over to the sid eof the grocery aisle” -> YES. Why is this not a rule.
Your trip looks so fun! I’m not a good camper (give me my shower!) but I love the thought of it! Your buffalo is pretty cool, with his own theme song and all that. :)
And I couldn’t agree more on the bees – I just want the honey, thats all!

lol! I thought I was alone out here in the land of “Cartoons Drive Me NUTS!” Some kid was watching cartoons on an iPad in the Dr’s office this week and all I could think was, “A) How does the mother listen to that without screaming and B) Haven’t they ever heard of earphones?”

I do not envy you that dirt. No, no I do not. Have fun in woods!

haha oh man I HATE bees. They freak me out and I run around like a little girl trying to get away from them when they come close to me! And yessss on the people not paying attention at the grocery store – or the insanely rude people (I was looking at some strawberries the other day and some woman literally just walked right in front of me – no apologies! And I was right in front of them so she had to squeeze her way in).

I think a Minion party sounds like the coolest thing ever. I’m getting an invite, right? :P

The little boy I used to sit for LOVED Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, and I couldn’t stand it. What happened to good kids shows like Bill Nye and Wishbone, I ask you?

Have you seen the Minion cake Zainab of the Blahnik Baker made recently on her blog? It’s amazing! I think you need to drop not-so-subtle hints around for people to make it for you. How about Buffalo Stance by Nineh Cherry for your soon-to-be-bison-pet’s theme song? Me ‘n the outdoors don’t get along, so of course, I’m terrified of bees and they love to buzz around me the entire time I’m not holed up in my house. I can sympathize with you!

Yikes, I’m terrified of bees too and they always seem to follow me around buzzing away near my ears – aargh! Oh boy, that plate of oysters is calling my name and totally drives me nuts when people aren’t paying attention and are in my way. Yup, you definitely need to check out Zainab’s cake – it’s fantastic! I just threw my lil guy a Minion theme party too – you should definitely do it for your 30th – it would be so cool :)

Fun to get to know you more in this post, Jennie! Also a hater of bees over here, but a lover of reubens. I could devour that whole sandwich… plus probably another! ;)

OMG BEES: i can’t take them. I actually ended up doing a sort of salsa-meringue number with the Wee One outside Chipotle last summer (with bags of food, mind you) because one particularly aggressive one would *NOT* leave us alone and kept trying to get in the car with us. It was like my worst nightmare and i still think about it b/c that’s exactly how much i hate bees. *shudder* ugh bees. my brain just wrinkled.

dirt under my nails freaks me out also. yeeaach.
you should know i always pull to a remote corner of the store to text someone or call them, if i have to, because standing in the middle of an aisle or running into someone? UNACCEPTABLE.
and you want to know how parents listen to that all day? oohhhhh we don’t; at least this one doesn’t. we have very limited tv around here because honestly, the Wee is too active to just sit there, and because THE VOICES. :)
i’m completely obsessed with Pixar/Disney/Dreamworks/basically any cool animation or animation in general. I would come to your minion party.

“Mickey Mouse’s voice is like a cheese grater on my brain”-that made me laugh out loud! :) I totally get what you mean, although I do love Mickey! Your trip sounds awesome! I’m not much of a camper, but it’s fun to hear about others trips!
