Serves:
Ingredients
- 1.5 pounds stewing steak, diced
- 1 onion, chopped
- 3 cloves of garlic, minced
- 8 oz mushrooms, sliced
- 2 tbsp flour
- 1 cup ale
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp dried thyme
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 sheet of puff pastry
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Instructions
-
Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C).
-
In a large skillet, heat some oil over medium heat and brown the steak on all sides. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
-
In the same skillet, cook the onions and garlic until softened and golden.
-
Add the mushrooms and cook until they release their water and start to brown.
-
Sprinkle flour over the vegetables and stir well to coat.
-
Gradually pour in the ale, scraping the bottom of the skillet to deglaze it.
-
Stir in the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and dried thyme. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
-
Return the steak to the skillet and bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 1.5 to 2 hours, or until the steak is tender and the sauce has thickened.
-
Transfer the steak and mushroom filling to a pie dish.
-
Roll out the puff pastry sheet on a floured surface to fit the size of the pie dish. Place the pastry over the filling, pressing the edges to seal.
-
Brush the pastry with beaten egg for a golden finish.
-
Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and golden.
-
Allow the pie to cool for a few minutes before serving.
