Method

  1. In a large pitcher, combine the white wine, caramel vodka, and unfiltered apple cider. Stir well to ensure the flavors are blended.

  2. Add the chopped Honeycrisp apples and cinnamon sticks to the pitcher. If you have time, let this mixture chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 to 4 hours to allow the fruit to macerate.

  3. Just before you are ready to serve, pour in the sparkling apple cider. Give it one very gentle stir so you don't lose the bubbles.

  4. Prepare your serving glasses by dipping the rims into a shallow dish of caramel sauce.

  5. Fill the caramel-rimmed glasses with ice, pour the sangria over, and make sure each glass gets a few pieces of the vodka-soaked apples.

Notes

Use a dry wine like Pinot Grigio to balance the sweetness of the caramel and cider.

Don't add the sparkling cider until right before serving or the sangria will go flat.

If you want a more decorative look, slice some apples into thin rounds instead of dicing them.

To prevent apples from browning before you put them in the pitcher, toss them in a little lemon juice.

Questions

Can I make this sangria ahead of time?
Yes! You can mix the wine, vodka, cider, and fruit up to 24 hours in advance. However, wait to add the sparkling cider until you are ready to serve so it stays bubbly.
What is the best wine for apple sangria?
A crisp, high-acid white wine works best. Look for Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, or an un-oaked Chardonnay. Avoid sweet wines like Moscato unless you want a very sugary drink.
Do I have to use caramel vodka?
Caramel vodka provides that specific 'caramel apple' flavor profile, but if you can't find it, you can use plain vodka and stir in 2-3 tablespoons of caramel syrup.
Can I make a non-alcoholic version?
Absolutely. Replace the wine and vodka with extra unfiltered apple cider and white grape juice, then top with the sparkling cider as usual.
