Method

  1. Place the mixed berries and simple syrup into a large cocktail shaker or a sturdy glass jar.

  2. Use a muddler or the back of a wooden spoon to firmly crush the berries until they have released all their juices and are mostly pulverized.

  3. Pour in the vodka and the fresh lemon juice over the muddled fruit.

  4. Fill the shaker about three-quarters full with ice cubes.

  5. Secure the lid and shake vigorously for at least 20 seconds until the outside of the shaker feels very cold to the touch.

  6. Use a fine-mesh strainer to pour the mixture into four chilled martini glasses; the double-straining ensures no seeds or pulp end up in your drink.

  7. Garnish each glass with a fresh raspberry or a slice of strawberry and serve immediately.

Notes

Chill your glasses in the freezer for 10 minutes before serving to keep the drink crisp.

If your berries are exceptionally sweet, reduce the simple syrup by half an ounce to balance the flavors.

Always use fresh lemon juice; the bottled stuff has a metallic aftertaste that ruins the fruit's brightness.

For a more complex flavor, swap one ounce of vodka for elderflower liqueur.

Questions

Can I use frozen berries?
Yes, frozen berries work perfectly. Just let them thaw for a few minutes so they are soft enough to muddle effectively.
How do I make simple syrup at home?
Dissolve equal parts white sugar and hot water, stir until clear, and let it cool before using.
Do I have to double strain the cocktail?
It is highly recommended. Berries have many small seeds and bits of pulp that can make the drink feel gritty if not filtered out.
Can I make this as a mocktail?
Absolutely. Replace the vodka with sparkling water or a non-alcoholic botanical spirit for a refreshing treat.
